Code of Conduct

Student Responsibilities

  • Attend school regularly and arrive on time
  • Follow all school rules and routines
  • Complete all assigned work and participate in learning to the fullest (being attentive, cooperative, showing pride in work, making wise use of time etc.)
  • Have proper materials ready for classes (books, pencils, notes, gym clothes etc.)
  • Be courteous and helpful to each other, to teachers, to other staff and visitors
  • Use proper language at all times
  • Respect others and their property (e.g. hands off)
  • Report any damage or danger around the school to a teacher or the office
  • Dress in a manner appropriate to the school environment with clothing that is clean, gives proper body coverage and has no offensive slogans or symbols
  • Pay for any damage done to school property

Students who fail to follow school rules, routines or responsibilities will face consequences and/or disciplinary action.

Consequences

When students fail to meet their responsibilities, any one or more of the following consequences may be applied:

  • warning (review of responsibilities and consequences)
  • detention or timeout
  • behaviour report is filed in the office
  • verbal or written apology
  • removal from the classroom
  • restitution by student where appropriate
  • behavioural or performance contract
  • withdrawal of privileges (field trips, special activities)
  • withdrawal from extra curricular activities
  • involvement of support personnel
  • parental involvement
  • suspension from school

Disciplinary Actions

  1. The Teacher or Principal may talk with the student and try to reach an understanding.
  2. A formal interview may be held between the student and staff member and consequences established.
  3. Parents/guardians will be notified about ongoing or serious problem behaviours. An interview may be conducted between the student, parents and appropriate school personnel.
  4. Suspension from school may be used for serious rule violations or continual infractions of the behaviour code.
  5. The District School Board of Niagara or Police may take action beyond the above in certain instances involving violent assault, vandalism or other criminal acts.
